What is The 175 Project?

The 175 Project is a UK-based online membership community built around one simple practice: one hour a day, across five pillars — Exercise, Read, Learn, Meditate and Journal. It was founded by Steve Fowles for people who want lasting personal growth without the all-or-nothing rules, streaks and restarts that make most self-improvement programmes so easy to give up on.

What does 175 stand for?

The name is the practice: 1 hour, 7 days a week, 5 pillars. Split evenly, that is 12 minutes a pillar each day. In practice, most members blend their hour to suit the day they are actually having.

What are the five pillars?

Exercise — movement of any kind: a walk, a run, a class, a stretch.

Read — books, long-form articles or audiobooks.

Learn — a course, a language, a skill, or a podcast that teaches you something.

Meditate — breathing, mindfulness or simply sitting still.

Journal — writing things down: reflection, plans, gratitude, whatever helps.

How does the daily hour work?

The hour is the container, and what goes in it is up to you. One day it might be 20 minutes reading, 30 minutes exercise and 10 minutes meditating. Another day it might be a 25-minute walk with an audiobook, then 10 minutes of quiet before work. The hour does not have to be sixty unbroken minutes, and on a hard week it bends. A shorter hour still counts.

Why are there no streaks?

Most habit programmes are built all-or-nothing: miss a day and you start again from zero. The 175 Project is built the other way. There are no streaks, no countdowns and no resets. Everyone misses days, and the next day is simply the next opportunity. What holds the practice together is community and structure, not willpower.

What is the weekly rhythm?

Each week has a shape in the member community. Monday Moans is the weekly reset: get it off your chest and move on. Traction Tuesday is for picking one thing to move forward. Throwback Thursday looks back at how far you have come. Finish Big Friday closes the week well. Sunday Structure sets your goals for the week ahead. Some prompts rotate fortnightly so they never go stale, and joining in is always optional.

What is the speaker series?

Once a month, members join a live talk from someone further down the road: 30 to 40 minutes, followed by 15 to 20 minutes of live questions and answers. Upcoming speakers are announced on the Speakers page.

Who founded The 175 Project?

The 175 Project was founded by Steve Fowles. In March 2020, during the first UK lockdown and after losing his mum, Steve went looking for evidence on what actually helps — and then started doing it: meditating, exercising, reading, learning and journalling. Six years on, he has done at least an hour a day, every day, across the five pillars. He pieced that hour together on his own. The 175 Project exists so that nobody else has to.

Steve is also a certified Strengthscope Master Practitioner (steve-fowles.co.uk) and co-founder of The Syndicate Global.

Is The 175 Project backed by research?

Each of the five activities has been studied in its own right, and published research associates them with better mental health, cognition and wellbeing. The 175 Project summarises that evidence honestly, including where the effects are modest. A recurring theme is that the step from doing nothing to doing something tends to matter more than the step from something to a great deal. The 175 Project is not a medical or therapy service and does not replace professional advice.

Who is it for?

The 175 Project is for anyone who wants a steady daily practice that fits real life: people who have tried all-or-nothing programmes and dropped out, busy professionals and parents who need an hour that bends, and organisations that want to support their teams’ wellbeing through corporate membership.

How much does membership cost?

Membership runs for 12 months in a single payment. The founding rate is £175, around 48p a day, for the first 100 members, and it is held for the life of continuous membership. After that, membership is [STANDARD RATE]. Corporate membership is a flat per-seat rate based on team size.
